SCI TV, EPISODE 39, JULY 14, 2014 (PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS IN SPORT; GUEST JORDAN MCNAMARA)

In this episode of SCI TV, we are joined by Jordan McNamara — Oregon Track Club Elite miler – to discuss the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) in track and field. Jordan shares his experience and insight regarding the controversial issues surrounding drugs in sport. We discuss the impact PEDs have on all athletes and on the sport of Track & Field, in particular. About Jordan McNamara: Jordan McNamara, affectionately known as J-Mac to his friends and supporters, is prime example of how consistent hard work through adversity eventually pays off. J-Mac ran 5:00 for the mile at 16 years of age. Many 14-year old athletes have run faster than that. J-Mac worked hard in training, eventually seeing improvements, and eventually won a spot on the coveted University of Oregon (UO) roster. At UO, he consistently struggled with injuries, and never really had an uninterrupted season, but pushed on through, eventually securing a Nike contract upon graduation to run professionally for the OTC Elite. In 2013, J-Mac finally had a breakthrough season while racing in Europe, running a personal best of 3:34.00 at the Memorial Leon Buyle – Flanders Cup Oordegem 2013, and winning the KBC Night of Athletics 1500m in Heusden (http://ift.tt/1oB5r1t). This mark was a new OTC Elite record, making J-Mac the fastest 1500m runner ever to have raced in the green singlet. In the mile, he has a personal best of 3:52.42, and at the time of writing is ranked #4 American in 2014. J-Mac’s story from average talent to elite professional is one of the inspirational stories of track and field, and his active social media platforms also connect him to his fans much better than many other elite athletes.
