The University of Oregon Athletics department had previously implemented a post-season assessment process that the self-administered but with little useful information resulting and a somewhat disappointing participation rate by student-athletes.
We worked with the student-athlete support staff and athletics administration to develop an assessment instrument that closely aligned to departmental goals and provided specific, actionable feedback based on valid, reliable interview and survey design.
For the first two post-season assessment cycles, we staffed the interview and survey process and trained UO staff on how to conduct the interviews. It was critical to identify staff that were independent of the areas being evaluated to ensure candid responses.
This process remains in place and provides the department with significant feedback three times per year on opportunities for organizational improvement and on areas where success should be protected and repeated. Student-athletes voiced appreciated for having input into their experiences as student-athletes and being able to see continuous improvement that saw substantial success on and off the field with multiple national championships and a large number of Academic All-Americans.
