The Miami Hurricanes humiliated the University of Texas 46-3 in the 1991 Cotton Bowl despite accumulating more than 200 yards in penalties. This article explores the extraordinary team dynamics that led Miami’s players to ignore their coaches, deferring instead to former players, and explores how their refusal to conform to traditional norms of sportsmanship relates to the evolution of the African-American underclass.
