Capello’s first move is to separate talent from performance. If you have reached the final round of interviews or the closing minutes of a championship, the physical ability is not in question—you are already in the top fraction of a percent, or you would not be there. Yet evaluation does not reward the ninety-eight percent you do well. It concentrates on the handful of moments where you hesitated, said the wrong thing, or missed. Those clutch moments are where the difference between candidates, and between paychecks, is actually decided.
The failure in those moments, Capello argues, is not a failure of skill but of decision-making under pressure driven by an unconscious reaction the performer cannot control. Sport is full of the phenomenon: an athlete who has struck the ball ten thousand times suddenly cannot, and observers conclude the ability is gone. It is not. Preparing for a certified master chef examination, Capello faced deliberately brutal critique from evaluators. The concept mirrors what Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir describe in their work on scarcity: mental bandwidth is a limited resource, and when it is taxed—by ambiguity, by fear, by decisions left unmade—less remains for the task in front of you. Capello maps the drains across several categories, and the practical claim is intuitive once seen: the pie is only so big, and whatever ambiguity and unresolved worry consume is no longer available when a high-pressure moment demands a clear head.4
This explains why the patterns feel involuntary and instantaneous. They operate in the fast, automatic mode of cognition that Daniel Kahneman describes—reactions that run in a fraction of a second, below awareness, and that we cannot simply reason our way out of in the moment. Capello is candid that the old patterns cannot be deleted; they were reinforced precisely because they once worked. What can change is the load. Capello points to the British men’s rowing eight that transformed itself from perennial also-rans into Olympic champions at the Sydney Games by adopting a single filter for every choice: will it make the boat go faster? That question collapsed a field of competing considerations into a binary, dropped the ambiguity that had been draining the crew, and freed their attention for training and execution. Pre-deciding the criteria is not rigidity; it is bandwidth protection, reserving scarce capacity for the moment that counts.6

Reducing ambiguity, narrowing decisions to what truly matters, and resolving friction before it festers are, in this light, direct investments in composure under pressure.
Implementation Phases
Phase 1: Map the Drains
Identify what is consuming bandwidth before the pressure moment—open loops, unresolved conflict, ambiguity, and the specific worries that recur. What can be named can be managed.
Phase 2: Pre-Decide the Filter
Collapse recurring choices into a simple, values-based question decided in advance, so that in the moment the performer executes rather than deliberates. Narrow the decision tree before you need it.
Phase 3: Keep the Baseline Low
Resolve friction early and reduce chronic ambiguity so bandwidth runs well below its limit. When the inevitable spike comes, there is room to absorb it without triggering the old pattern.
Practical Implications
For Athletic Administrators and Coaches:
Recognize that a capable athlete who falters in the clutch is usually overloaded, not undertalented. Reduce the ambiguity you control—clarify roles, expectations, and processes—and teach simple pre-decided filters, so that under pressure athletes execute what they have trained instead of managing spiraling worry.
For Athletes and Executives Under Pressure:
Protect your bandwidth as a finite resource. Close open loops, pre-commit your decision criteria, and stop spending capacity manufacturing confidence you can instead build. Composure is lighter than performance because it consumes less, and it is what evaluators actually read in the decisive moment.
For Conflict Resolution Practitioners:
Treat unresolved conflict as a bandwidth tax on the whole system. Early, fair resolution does more than settle a dispute; it clears the ambiguity that quietly degrades decision-making across a team. Design processes that reduce open loops and give people clarity before pressure forces a reaction.
