SCI TV, EPISODE 41, JULY 30, 2014 (ATHLETE TRANSITIONS AND CHALLENGES; GUEST DR. SHANNON LEINERT)

In this episode of SCI TV, we explore athlete transitions in the world of college and professional sports with professional 800m runner and Olympic hopeful, Dr Shannon Leinert. She discusses the types of issues that are both unique to her sport’s culture as well as common problems that many of her peers face, unseen to the public eye. About Dr Shannon Leinert: A professional track and field athlete who currently represents the Oregon Track Club Elite, Shannon was once kicked off her college team, with her coach calling her “uncoachable”. Though initially viewing it as the greatest adversity in her life, Shannon now says that experience served as the chisel that shaped her into the runner she is today. Transferring to the University of Missouri, Shannon thrived in a new environment, earning 3 more bids to the NCAA championships, became a 2-time conference champion, was ranked 2nd in the 800m among college women, and went on to run professionally. She earned her PhD in special education from the University of Missouri in 2013, and aims to continue teaching and doing research for children with autism.
